Science Translational Medicine featured recent research by Elizabeth Nance and Graeme Woodworth on the cover of their Aug 29th issue. Their work shows that much larger than previously expected nanoparticles can penetrate within normal human and rodent brain tissue, but only if densely coated with a bio-inert, hydrophilic polymer, poly(ethylene-glycol) or PEG. Achieving penetration in the brain with larger particles allows for greater flexibility in designing particles that have more uniform, longer-lasting, and effective delivery of drugs within the brain.

WYPR featured the CNM’s own Laura Ensign and Richard Cone
August 6, 2012

WYPR, Baltimore’s local NPR station, featured the CNM’s own Laura Ensign-Hodges and Richard Cone, a faculty in the Department of Biophysics, on their Maryland Morning program. Laura and Richard were discussing the role of the mucus barrier in protection against disease, and the challenge of getting therapeutics through this mucus barrier to treat unhealthy tissue. The podcast highlights Laura’s recent work showing mucus-penetrating particles can protect against HSV in mice, published in the Science Translational Medicine. Listen to the podcast.

Members are receiving attention for their recently published paper
April 22, 2012

Drs Rangaramanujam Kannan (primary appointment in Ophthalmology) and Sujatha Kannan (primary appointment in Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine), each members of the Center for Nanomedicine at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins, are receiving significant attention for their recently published paper showing a breakthrough use of Nanomedicine for the treatment of neuroinflammation. In a paper published April 18th in Science Translational Medicine, the Kannans showed that the effects of Cerebral Palsy could be reversed in a rabbit model of the disease by delivering anti-inflammatory drugs in a highly targeted manner through the blood-brain barrier to cells involved in the inflammatory process in the CNS, specifically activated microglia and astrocytes.
